Toro, east of the capital and overlooking the Duero, is the centre of a wine-growing area with its own designation of origin, and home to a Romanesque collegiate church. It draws wine tourism and generates trips to Zamora and Valladolid for work and appointments.

Which way it goes

Zamora is a large province with a scattered population and many small villages far from the capital. The most requested internal trips are from the outlying areas into Zamora — hospital, station, errands — and from Sanabria, Aliste or Sayago that means a long time on minor roads where buses run only a few times a day.

Lake Sanabria, of glacial origin, lies in the natural park of the same name, a few kilometres from Puebla de Sanabria. In summer its beaches and car parks fill up, and the rest of the year the area has very little public transport.

When demand peaks

• Summer in Sanabria (July and August): In summer Lake Sanabria and Puebla de Sanabria receive tourists from all over Spain, and visits to the area multiply. The lake's car parks fill early, and arrivals by train at Sanabria station need a connection to the accommodation.

Tip: If your car is stuck in Benavente after a breakdown or a change of plans, give the exact spot: the motorway junction has several service areas.
