Which way it goes

Zamora is a large province with a scattered population and many small villages far from the capital. The most requested internal trips are from the outlying areas into Zamora — hospital, station, errands — and from Sanabria, Aliste or Sayago that means a long time on minor roads where buses run only a few times a day.

Between villages in Zamora distances are long and buses are infrequent, often weekdays only. A trip that is direct by car may require going through the capital or Benavente by public transport.

On arrival: Sanabria

Sanabria, in the far north-west on the borders with Galicia and Portugal, is a mountain area with the Lake Sanabria Natural Park. Puebla de Sanabria is its main town and service centre; in summer it receives many tourists, and the rest of the year it is a long way from the hospital in Zamora.

Tip: If you are catching a train at Zamora from a village, give the train's departure time when booking: the driver works out the pickup from it.
