Leaving from Alfoz de Toro

Toro, east of the capital and overlooking the Duero, is the centre of a wine-growing area with its own designation of origin, and home to a Romanesque collegiate church. It draws wine tourism and generates trips to Zamora and Valladolid for work and appointments.

Which way it goes

The A-66 links Zamora with Salamanca to the south and, via Benavente, with León and Asturias to the north; the A-52 leaves Benavente for Ourense and Vigo, and the A-6 for Ponferrada and Lugo. Valladolid is reached via Toro and Tordesillas, and there are border crossings into Portugal through Aliste and Sanabria.

Salamanca lies south on the A-66, the Silver Route, and is the provincial capital closest to Zamora. It is a frequent trip for students, for appointments at its university hospital and for visits to the city.

On arrival: Campo de Salamanca

The city of Salamanca and Santa Marta de Tormes, across the river and now almost joined to it, make up the province's urban area. The university, the hospital and the station are here, so it is both the starting point for trips to Madrid and the arrival point from the rest of the province.

Tip: If you are catching a train at Zamora from a village, give the train's departure time when booking: the driver works out the pickup from it.
